But I keep meaning to tell you: the women in white aren't full nuns, they aren't allowed to take the 300 or so full Vinaya vows because Buddha said to become a nun you have to be ordained by both monks and nuns but the women's lineage died out a long time ago (100? 500? 1000? years) so of course you can't start it up again because you'd need a fully ordained nun to ordain other nuns... These wonderful women in white, known as mae-chis, take only a few semi-lay precepts and have almost no standing in the community, until recently they basically were the monks' servants. There's more to the story too, women in the southeast Asian Buddhist traditions who have taken full vows, but they are either highly controversial or based in so-called western countries (e.g., U.S. or Europe or Australia...). Probably more than you wanted to know.Judy Roitmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05516857305795744182noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7743642182635333287.post-17503695749165323762009-11-19T05:50:33.680-08:002009-11-19T05:50:33.680-08:00Jim, good to see the article this morning. "T...Jim, good to see the article this morning. "The poet's corner in the newspaper. You know what I mean." Ha! Glad I'm not the only one who winces each time I pass that corner. Sorry I can't make the reading tonight, but looking forward to getting into the new book. I'll post the JW article on my Facebook page so George Laughead will see it (if he hasn't already).
